Serengeti Under Canvas – The DetailCCAfrica (soon to be re-named) have long been synonymous with the best lodges in both South Africa and Tanzania. Serengeti Under Canvas has now been established for a few years and is a successful departure into new territory for them and is in following with the likes of Nomads and Sayari Mobile Camps. Situated in the Serengeti, this group of camps are by far the most luxurious of the mobile safari options, with flush loos as en-suite and chandeliers in each tent, each camp site is chosen along the route of the migration and is never more than 30 minutes away from the action. The guiding and the food, as is the standard with the CCAfrica properties, are both very good and nights out amongst the calls of the wild, comfortable. Moving with the Migration of the wildebeest herds, each of the three camps, with 6 tents in total, is organised into a main dining tent and lounge area, complete with books and antique furniture, each with private views into the bush, and the staff quarters where the butlers and guides retire in the evening. From January to May the three camps all regroup down in the southern Serengeti Plains as the Migration herd moves south to calve and feast on the new grass that arrives after the November rains. As the herd starts north again, the camps split into 2 and 1 moving up to the very north to the Mara River close to the Tanzanian border, and to the privately owned Klein’s Concession to the north East. Both locations have their benefits in that the Mara River sees plenty of crossings as the herd head into Kenya, and the Klein’s concession has great game that is permanent, the herds passing through on their way back down, and the availability of walking and night driving.
Serengeti Under Canvas – Our viewThe camps are well organised and each tent has been designed with cool and comfort in mind. With a bucket shower as standard this is still bush camping, but with the flamboyant extras that CCA seem to endow to all of their properties such as a flush loo and chandeliers. The extras don’t stop there with each tent being allocated a private butler and gazebo in which to have private suppers. The benefits of being located by the migration are obvious, the only drawbacks for us being the cost and the shared vehicles.
