Norman Carr Safaris"Zambia's original safari company", has been operating photographic and walking safaris in the South Luangwa National Park since 1950. Seemingly similar in style to Robin Pope Safaris, Norman Carr Safaris also have their main permanent camp in the Mfuwe area of South Luangwa and their bush camps set further into the quieter areas of the parks.
Their bush camps range from the stylish simplicity of Luwi Bush Camp, one of the most traditional of all Zambia's bush camps, to the elegance and sophistication of Mchenja Camp. Kakuli and Nsolo are fit in between in between Mchenja and Luwi, offering a bush product that is luxurious in all the right places, just never over the top.
Kapani Lodge, meaning place of Mopani trees, was built in 1986 by Norman Carr himself as his own home, Kapani remained a private house until he died in 1997. Today his home his been transformed into a 10 roomed lodge on the banks of a hippo and croc filled lagoon beside the Luangwa river in South Luangwa.
Luwi Bushcamp is a beautiful camp set back from the dry Luwi River. This is a camp that epitomizes the legacy of Norman Carr; a rustic South Luangwa bushcamp set miles from any other camp that is focussed solely on walking safaris.
Kakuli Bushcamp Meaning “old buffalo bull”, has one of the most spectacular settings of all of Luangwa’s camps. Set on the edge of the Luangwa River in South Luangwa, the lodge looks upstream with a wide stretch of river on its right and a grazing stretch of bush to its left.
NsoloBushcamp is set on the banks of the sand river with superb views and a great location. Located in South Luangwa, Nsolo; meaning “the honey guide” – so named after the extraordinary honey guide bird that will literally lead you to honey – is another of Carr’s great bush camps.
Mchenja is Norman Carr’s most luxurious bush camp. Overlooking the Luangwa River itself, massive ebony tree’s (Mchenja) surround the camp, offering respites from the sun and spacious areas where each of the octagonal tents enjoys total privacy.
