A guide to Botswana Safaris

To get the most out of a Botswana Safari, the different areas of the country and for that matter, the diversity of safaris on offer have to be fully appreciated. It is very important to choose the right area for your tastes and interests, and also the right area for the time of year.

July to October is peak season in most of Africa and there is no exception for Botswana Safari; the Delta, Linyanti, Savuti and Chobe regions are in their peak seasons for game viewing. Travel at other times of the year and you really need to speak to one of the experts in our team to get the most out of your trip.

Below is a very brief introduction to the variety and diversity of Botswana Safari, the regions and examples of camps that offer these kinds of activities. The remainder of the internet site www.botswanaodyssey.com will go into depth about each park, region and each camp but the key for now is to give you a background from which to start looking into your Botswana Safari from.

The level of the flood in the Okavango Delta is of key significance for a trip to Botswana (please see the page marked flood position on our Botswana Safari website for more information) as choose the wrong camp and you cannot take any makoro activities. To sum the flood movement up in a sentence however, flood is at its lowest level in December and most in July!

Therefore depending on the time of year you decide to travel, you may need to choose camps that have year round water. Below are examples of the different styles of camps…categorized as the 'Water Camps', the 'Combination Water/Land Activity Camps' and the 'Land Camps'

The Water Activity Camps

These camps have water year round due to their location close to main channels. Makoro trips can always be possible. e.g. Jao and Xigera in the Delta

Combination Water / Land Activity Camps

These camps offer all the activities of a water camp and a land camp (depending on the level of the flood) and if chosen well can provide the best of all worlds, taking in all the variety that a Botswana Safari in the Delta can provide. e.g. Duba, Chitabe, Nxabega, Vumbura Plains

The Land Camps

These are the areas to view the big game, plains game and predators. Most game activities are taken in open 4x4 vehicles although walking is also possible as are night drives. The best areas for land camps are Savuti, Linyanti and Moremi, e.g. Kings Pool, Savuti Camp and Mombo

The Makgadikgadi Pans Camps, e.g. Jacks and San Camp

Great areas to get to for people who want to see the full diversity that a Botswana Safari can offer. Great for game at certain times of the year and even when the game is not there activities on this arid, lunar landscape are stunning.
