Stone Town - An expert guide to Zanzibar’s capital and Where to Stay

Zanzibar’s Stone Town is a fascinating a living monument to the culture and histories of its curious mix of East African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European conquerors, traders and seafarers. This is the heart of Zanzibar, alive with all the secrets of this charismatic Indian Ocean island.

A stay in Stone Town allows a glimpse of the essence of Zanzibar, the sights, sounds and smells of the market, restaurants, harbour and mosques, a very real and unsanitised view! The Stone Town street markets rely on tourism to thrive, although it is possible to find genuine artworks and antiques amongst the more mass-produced creations.

Exploring the maze of Stone Town

Stone Town is an extraordinary place to explore; the ancient maze of narrow streets is a romantic hotchpotch of historic old stone buildings built close for cool respite from the tropical island sun, and shaded by elegantly carved balconies, loggias and verandas that cling precipitously overhead.

History Abounds

A short stay in Stone Town allows time to see the Sultan’s Palaces, and experience the sights and sounds of this idiosyncratic centre. There are a number of fine buildings to see, some, such as the House of Wonders and the Arab Fort, have been restored to create areas for coffee and relaxation within. Generally the best way to explore Stone Town is simply to meander the streets, window shopping and absorbing the atmosphere.

Key to Zanzibari Doors

A walk here reveals a range of elaborately carved doors with delicately executed patterns of lotus flowers, fish and vines or dates, and sometimes inscribed with passages from the Koran to tell of the household within. These are a statement of wealth of the original inhabitant, as the door was usually the only outward expression of the house concealed within the courtyard beyond, and was often even created first.

A Sense of Stone Town

As the sun sets, muezzins in their different mosque towers call the faithful to prayers again, dogs bark and children shout as they play football in open corners or dive into the harbour waters and demonstrate feats of bravery with their friends. A crowd gathers along the harbour front and in Forodhani Gardens, where smoke rises from barbecues at the assorted food stalls and the curio markets assembling by gaslight amid a hubbub of banter and chat...This is a world apart, and it is worth a visit.

Emerson & Green
Emerson and Green is a small hotel that achieves its helplessly chic aim of not feeling like a hotel at all. New additions include the enormous Ball Room, with two vast double beds and said to be the largest hotel room in Zanzibar, the Lavender room and the Gallery. The old favourites are named after points of the compass; South is accessible over high wooden bridge, and provides a semi open air bathroom with views over Stone Town, separated from bedroom by small private veranda. West also has good views, and a kidney shaped bath for romantic soaks, while in East a lattice work wall provides an atmospheric dappled light and catches the breeze. All rooms have a memorably romantic bath and a sense of bohemian antique grandeur.

Tembo Hotel
Less ostentatious than the Serena, the Tembo Hotel is also located in an impressive old building on the waterfront, and designed around a central courtyard with a swimming pool and beachfront terrace. Rooms are furnished with antique Zanzibari furniture and sunken Persian baths with showers, and include fridge, telephone, satellite tv, hairdryer and air-conditioning. Nevertheless it remains an elegantly authentic choice - to the extent that it is also Muslim run and serves no alcohol.

Zanzibar Serena Inn
The Serena presently provides the most upmarket luxury accommodation and service in Stone Town. The grand whole has been entirely decked out with antiques and artefacts, with a view to recreating a sense of the opulence of the Zanzibari hey-days. It occupies a prime location on the waterfront near the town centre, and is the only hotel in town with a particularly inviting swimming pool. It is spaciously grand and expensive, but service and ocean-view dining are reliably good.

Dhow Palace Hotel
The Dhow Palace is tucked away within the maze of Stone Town streets just a short distance from the harbour front. The hotel is set around a cool indoor courtyard with a fountain and has just been given a fresh renovation. It is well run and decorated with authentic Zanzibari antiques, and similar in style and atmosphere to its sister hotel, the Tembo. Without the benefit of the sea breeze and views, the Dhow Palace is marginally less expensive than Tembo, but the good rooms are much larger, especially on the second floor, with some beds so tall that they come with steps!

Beyt Al Chai
This pretty town was at one time a tea house belonging to a wealthy Zanzibarian merchant. Situated directly opposite the Serena Inn, personal service and an oasis of tranquility in the otherwise busy surrounds of Stone Town, this is a fanstastic choice. With just 6 en suite rooms, the inn has an intimate and private feel. Horsehair sofas, bold batics and finely crafted Zanzibari furnishings complement a rich palette to create a convincingly authentic traders house.
All the rooms are air conditioned, and a couple have wide stone baths.

Zanzibar Palace Hotel
Zanzibar Palace Hotel is a relatively new addition to Stone Town situated in the Kiponda region; close to the port, the House of Wonders and Mercury’s (a good place to watch the sun go down). It is a small boutiquey hotel with excellent rooms. Especially the Suites which are beautiful…one has a rooftop bathroom and sundeck! They offer a highly personalized service and will help you with all aspects of your stay (organising tours etc.)
