The BBC’s ‘A Perfect Planet’ – Exploring the Ndutu Plains of the Serengeti

If you tuned into BBC1 last night, you will no doubt have been captivated by the exquisite wildlife footage on David Attenborough’s latest show piece. A Perfect Planet explores the key ingredients that shape our world, from the weather to oceanic currents and everything in between.

Last night was all about how Volcanoes have shaped the Earth’s landscape and how they have enabled an abundance and variety of wildlife that is almost impossible to comprehend. The penultimate location of the hour-long episode was the incredible Ndutu Plains of the Serengeti National Park. Whilst the incredible river crossings in the North of the National Park receives the majority of the media attention, the calving season is the best time of year to see the herds in their great congregations.  Between January and March thousands of calves are born as the short grassy plains receive over 1.5 million wildebeest as their search for greener pastures continues.

Whilst the Volcanic ashes have ensured Ndutu is home to copious amounts of nutrient rich grass, this time of year is also a time of abundance for predators. Wild dogs, cheetah, lion and hyena are all found on these plains as are the smaller hunters like serval, jackal and caracal. There really is no better time to witness their incredible hunting techniques than during this period.

As would be expected, this time of year sees the mobile migration camps head South to give you front row seats to one of the world’s most incredible spectacles. Nomad’s Serengeti Safari Camp and Asilia’s Olakira are both beautiful, tented camps that call the Ndutu plains home until April. Both camps offer exceptional service and hospitality as well as very luxurious surroundings. Their small size ensures a personal and intimate experience. There really is no better way to experience the Serengeti than under the canvas of a mobile camp!
