Sitting on the shores of Lake Manyara, Maramboi is a large permanent tented camp offering game drives in both Manyara National Park and Tarangire. It shares its unique location with just one other lodge and is a lovely quiet alternative to the value lodges clustered around the north of Tarangire. It’s a bit big but that serves to keep the price incredibly low given the quality of the rooms and main areas.
Maramboi Tented Camp - The Facts
With 32 standard tents, 8 suites and 2 units with 2 interconnected rooms, Maramboi is a little on the large side. But given it’s very quiet location, on the shores of Lake Manyara
but closer to Tarangire National Park
, the lodge doesn’t feel crowded. The rooms themselves are permanent tents sitting on raised wooden platforms and are surprisingly good given the price. Large, tasteful and clean with 24 hour electricity.
At the centre of the camp are the main mess area and swimming pool as well as a library and lounge. All enjoy enormous views across the flat plains out over the lake and beyond to the escarpment of cliffs at the far side of Manyara National Park. Sundowners by the lake are a highlight, as are pre-dinner nibbles around the fire under a starry sky - normally the preserve of more expensive lodges.
The area is a birders paradise in the rainy season but really comes to life from July to October as animals migrate past the lodge to the permanent water sources of the lake and Tarangire’s swamps. Tarangire is a 40 minute drive away for the 5,000 strong yearly elephant migration while Lake Manyara can also be visited with a slightly further drive.
Although we prefer lodges located inside parks, Maramboi is amazingly cheap because of where it is and because of its size. It makes a fine base for Tarangire and a great start to a lower budget safari
. Walk and night drives complete an impressive lodge.
