Chole Mjini Is on Mafia Island has been set up as apartnership between Jean and Anne de Villiersand the people of Chole Mjini. It aims topromote tourism and directly benefit the localcommunity and it succeeds. A significantproportion of the revenue received for everyguest goes towards community developmentprojects.
So far this has facilitated the buildingof a primary school, kindergarten, market andclinic, and there are more projects in progress. This small lodge is unique. It has no fencearound it, and simply merges with the village. Six tree-houses stand on stilts, high up inbaobab trees. From your house in the tree-tops, you look over the mangroves to the seabeyond. Each has it?s own bathroom, at thebase of the trees, with compositing toilet andromantic open-air showers with plenty of hotwater on demand. In the main banda you willfind large comfy cushions for relaxing on,reference books, novels, a selection of gamesand a central table for dining. Activities at Chole include sailing trips, snorkelling and fishing.

The main drawback of Chole Mjini is it's lack of beach - its more like a creek but then again, Mafia is not so much about great beaches. Again, we bang on about the pool. Tanzanian heat is just too strong to not have one and as at some points of the day you cannot swim because of the tides, a pool is essential.
