Tanzania Honeymoon

Tanzania is unquestionably one of the very best destinations for an African Honeymoon.  In our view, it has it all - fantastic Indian Ocean beaches and amazing safaris with plenty of big five and lots of predator action.  We understand that your Tanzania honeymoon needs to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience and absolutely perfect. With our in-depth knowledge of the country and many decades of travel planning experience, we can ensure that it will be. We favour small, boutique accommodation rather than large corporate hotels, and lodges set in beautiful, wild locations. Tanzania has exactly what we want, to suit all kinds of honeymooners - adventurous,  super romantic, mountain-climbers, deep sea divers, those seeking ultimate luxury and those whose preferred vibe is special but simple beach-shack-chic...

Why choose Tanzania for your Honeymoon?

  • Tanzania offers some of the best game viewing, along with some of the most beautiful beaches, in the world. Here you can seamlessly combine an authentic, wild safari with a deserted Indian Ocean beach holiday...  A perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, and a fantastic start to married life, in our opinion!
  • Budget: Tanzania has some seriously good lodges at great prices for an Africa honeymoon; however for those who want to splash out for the last word in luxury, there are also some astronomically expensive lodges in Tanzania...
  • Tanzania is the best place to see the Great Migration, when 1.5m wildebeest move en masse, in search of green pastures following the rains. To witness it together as newly-weds is a truly unforgettable experience.
  • Tanzania is well-developed in terms of infrastructure and the guest experience. Why not add in a hot air balloon trip, a night fly camping in the bush or an alfresco dinner in the middle of the Serengeti?

  • Which are the most romantic lodges for a Tanzania Honeymoon?

In the North of Tanzania there are some stunning camps, perfect for honeymoons, including the likes of the Ngorongoro Crater LodgeSasakwaFaru FaruKleins Camp and Serengeti Under Canvas, which offer every conceivable luxury and all of which will delight newlyweds with surprises such as private bush breakfasts, romantic private sundowners etc. Starting at $1,000 per person per night, however, these lodges are definitely top-end.
Slightly more affordable, yet still superb, are the likes of  Sayari and Nomads Lamai.  For an adventurous honeymoon you could opt for one of Serengeti's mobile camps, including Alex Walker’s SerianNomads Serengeti Safari CampKimondo and Olakira, which offer fabulous game viewing, value for money and a much more luxurious experience than most clients expect!  These mobile camps start at around $750 per person per night.

The South of Tanzania has a number of great lodges - Selous Safari campBeho BehoSand RiversMwagusi and Jongomero are all fantastic lodges for honeymoons at the top end of the market (from $595 to $1,000pppn) whereas the likes of Lake Manze Camp, Impala and Mdonya Old River are substantially more affordable and still superb for game viewing.
No honeymoon to Tanzania would be complete without some time at the beach. Mnemba Island is the best of them all, but at $3,000 a night it ought to be!  PalmsBaraza and Kilindi are superb and slightly more affordable while the likes of Ras NungwiBreezes and Matemwe Bungalows offer great honeymoon accommodation at sensible prices. Lastly, Ras Kutani (on the mainland coast) is our favourite honeymoon lodge in the whole of Africa - an outstanding beach lodge at a ridiculously good price.

    Tanzania Honeymoon Itinerary planning

The most important decision to make is between the North of Tanzania and the South (or both). Northern Tanzania is rightly renowned as one of the world’s top safari destinations: the iconic Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater offer outstanding game viewing year-round, perfect for those who have never been on safari and experienced safari enthusiasts alike.
The downside of the north is that it is understandably popular, and so all but the most exclusive locations are pretty busy, and prices are also a bit higher. Activities are strictly regulated here, so the majority of lodges only offer standard game drives (no walking, boating or night drives). It is also a little further from the beach, and takes a little longer to cover the circuit properly.

This is where Southern Tanzania comes in.  The gems of the South are Selous Game Reserve (the largest game reserve in Africa) and Ruaha National Park, which have remained unspoilt by mass tourism and as a result offer a more authentic and intimate safari experience. The South offers fantastic game viewing, and is in season from early July until the end of October.  The rules here are more relaxed, allowing boating, walking and fly camping in the bush. Accommodation is better value (more luxury for your money), and the parks are closer both to each other and the beach, meaning less travelling time.

Zanzibar is a fantastic option for a beach break. There are a number of superb beach options, with prices varying hugely. Zanzibar has so much to offer, we’ve given it a whole page to itself!

Tanzania has such a great range of safari and beach options that there's certainly no need to look beyond its borders for either adventure or relaxation.  However, if you want to combine Tanzania with another country, Rwanda and Uganda both offer opportunities for gorilla trekking (and there are direct flights between Rwanda and the Serengeti).  Mozambique and the Seychelles offer some of the best beaches in the world - although logistics can be tricky, and they are certainly not cheap!

How much does a Tanzania Honeymoon cost?

Tanzania offers a real range of accommodation options with safari prices starting from around $350 per person per night going right up to $1,700 pppn at the top end.  While on safari, the rate generally includes all your game viewing activities, meals and drinks.

Generally the beach part of a Tanzania honeymoon is cheaper - starting at around $120 per person per night with a huge variety of afforable options. For an exclusive private island experience we are looking at around $1700 pppn.

We can also arrange the internal flights between safari and beach, which as a guide cost around $250 per flight per person.

A budget 10-night safari and beach honeymoon in Tanzania would cost around $2,900 per person; a mid-range 13-night safari and beach honeymoon would cost around $6,800 pp, and for those who like the finer things in life, a high-end 11-night safari and beach trip would cost around $9,500 pp.  An uber-luxurious 10-day safari and beach trip would cost from $15,000 per person upwards.

When is the best time of year for a Honeymoon in Tanzania?

Tanzania is located in the tropics so you can expect temperatures of 25 degrees C + throughout the year. It is possible to visit all year round, but we wouldn’t recommend Tanzania's beaches in April and May as this is when East Africa gets its heavy rains. Each time of year has pros and cons for each location, so the best option is to contact us and chat with one of our Tanzania experts. Alternatively, click here for more information.

    Top 5 Honeymoon tips

The South of Tanzania offers smaller boutique lodges and camps which are often owner-run. This gives a more more personal and intimate safari experience, which we feel is a vital element of a Tanzania honeymoon.
Don’t head off on safari straight after your wedding - you will be shattered! Ask us about a beach-safari-beach combination which works really well for a varied and ralexing honeymoon.
It is always tempting to save a few pennies on your international flights but make sure you arrive at a decent hour - there is nothing worse than starting your honeymoon at 3am in an empty airport!
Don’t try and do too much. Safari is probably the best honeymoon you can do... but it can be quite full on! It is much better to have a shorter (3 night) safari somewhere really luxurious, rather than a longer safari of dubious quality.
After 20 years of working in Tanzania we have access to some fabulous deals - ask us about our 50%-off-for-the-bride special offer as well as other fantastic Honeymoon deals.

Luxury vs Adventure for your Tanzania Honeymoon?

Tanzania has plenty of options for all types of traveller, and your trip can be as luxurious or hard-core rustic and adventurous as you like. Adrenaline-seeking adventurers can summit Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, or perhaps sleep out under the stars on a dry river bed in Ruaha National Park as part of a 7-night walking safari. For the hedonists and sybarites, Tanzania has some of the finest lodges in Africa in some of the most remote and truly wild locations. Ask us about the exclusive Grumeti Reserve attached to the Serengeti, and which can be combined with Mnemba Island for the ultimate exclusive honeymoon fit for a movie star.

    Tanzania vs Kenya Honeymoon?

Tanzania and Kenya are both great for honeymoons as they offer a range of different safari areas, styles of accommodation and activities. We tend to lean towards Tanzania for honeymoons as the distances, especially in Southern Tanzania, are much shorter which really helps to keep travel time and costs down.  In addition, the best beaches on the Kenyan Coast  are often very busy - whereas the Tanzania coast and its network of islands offer a much wider range of accomodation options as well as some quieter spots. Tanzania really offers everything that honeymooners could want, whether you are an adventurous, adrenaline-seeking, snorkelling, diving, climbing dynamic duo, or more of a chill-by-the-pool-with-a-G&T kind of couple!

How to combine a Tanzania safari with the beach?

Tanzania is blessed with miles of beautiful wild coastline as well as a number of pristine Indian Ocean Islands. From any safari location in Tanzania you can reach the beach within one day - a real advantage over other African destinations where you have to cross borders, overnight in city hotels, and generally waste money and time.  Further afield, a safari in Tanzania can also be combined with the Seychelles or Mauritius, but you will have to factor in extra travel time and possibly a night in Johannesburg.
