Zanzibar Honeymoon

For many people, a combination of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar makes for the ideal honeymoon: a truly exotic and little-visited country, where outstanding game viewing can easily be combined with some laid-back luxury on a picture-postcard beach in Zanzibar.
As a company we favour small, boutique accommodation rather than large corporate hotels. Especially for a honeymoon, we think this is particularly important in order to have a really intimate and unqiue trip. Luckily, it just so happens that this is Zanzibar's speciality. Zanzibar is home to many quirky accommodation options, and has more than enough variety to suit all different types of honeymoooners - the adventurous, the super romantic, those seeking ultimate luxury and those who prefer special but simple beach-shack-chic. Zanzibar is our number 1 favourite colourful, vibrant yet completely enchanting Indian Ocean getaway.

Why go to Zanzibar for your honeymoon?

  • Zanzibar has a huge amount of variety. It has so many activities, and also so many different beachy retreats that it is almost impossible not to find a hideaway which suits your personal taste and budget!
  • Zanzibar is only a short hop over from Tanzania mainland and all of the excitement which it's incredible game viewing offers. It is the best located country in Africa to easily and affordably comkbine the beach and safari. A Tanzania honeymoon is the ultimate wilderness and sunshine destination... In our opinion!
  • Stone Town, the main town in Zanzibar offers so much too - take a romantic stroll around and purchase some top class Zanzibar goodies! There is a huge range of things to buy from real tack, to amazing handmade jewellry. Whatever you buy, have fun bargaining with the locals for an amazing deal. Stone Town is rather run down, but we think there is a certain charm and charisma in the crumbling walls.
  • The food on Zanzibar is incredible. It has amazing fresh seafood, and a huge amount of Arabic influence in both it's atmosphere and cuisine. The cuisine is Arabic-infused delights at every turn and as a result, spices are huge here, so be sure to buy some and try to replicate some part of your honeymoon back at home! (It won't be the same!).

  • Which are the most romantic hotels on Zanzibar?

Xanadu offers a leafy and intimate private gewaway. It does come with a price tag, but really combines a bit of Zanzibar tradition and modern luxury very well. The accommodation is really tastefully put together, and the gardens make you feel as if you are almost alone. The huge draw of Xanadu however which trumps all it's other alluring attributes, is the amazing Michelin star chefs which makes it such a popular choice for foodies.

If you are looking for more than just a bit of beach romance in your Zanzibar accommodation, then look no further than Palms. In our opinion, this is the most intimate and lavish of the options on the island. Surrounding the lodge, has a really amazing beach and you will be extremelly well catered for here. It goes way beyond the expectations of a beach lodge in order to make your stay exceptional.

Zawadi is the freshest luxury pick from Zanzibar. With it's simple and clean-cut design, with all the luxuries and amenities you could ask for, it provides a really refreshing and sleek romantic beach getaway. As well as it's fantastic pool, the lagoon provides a permanent swimming area, unlike some of the rest of Zanzibar which is tidal so doesn't always have that option. It has great food and accommodation and will give you a slice of real Indian Ocean luxury on your honeymoon.

Zuri Zanzibar is a new opening, and really encapsulates a cool and quirky vibe in the midst of it's 55 suites. The huge perk of Zuri is that as well as really fantastic accomodation with verandas and big double beds, it caters for a wide range of budgets which we think is really important for honeymooners who don't want to break the bank, but still fancy a dash of Zanzibar luxury.

    Stone Town

Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar, is a fascinating small town on the coast, brimming with the hustle and bustle of local life. Steeped in history, it is a captivating living monument to the curious mix of cultures of its East African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European conquerors, traders and seafarers. Not to see Stone Town while you are in Zanzibar would be a real shame! We are in no doubt that the best way to get about Stone Town is with a private guide. Some say the best approach is to meander the streets, window shopping and absorbing the atmosphere...but that can also mean a day getting lost! Hiring a guide will help you to make the most out of your time in Stone Town, and protects you from being hassled. There are many fine buildings to visit including the House of Wonders, the Arab Fort, various ruined Sultan's Palaces, museums, the Forodhani Gardens and many more historical attractions.

    Zanzibar Honeymoon itinerary planning

Zanzibar beach honeymoons are so easy to combine with a Tanzania safari, it is almost impossible to resist. For the super adventurous, you can even climb Kilimanjaro on your special week - quite the honeymoon story! Alternatively, you can do range of different itineraries, all ending in Zanzibar.

One option is to begin in Arusha, go and see the mighty and beautiful Ngorongoro Crater for a 2 night stay, before going on in hunt of the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the most spectacular natural events on the planet, and then to Zanzibar for relaxation before your flight home from Dar es Salaam.

Alternatively, the South and West Tanzania provides something completely different, with walking safaris, fly camping, boating and even some of the best chimpanzee viewing in the whole of Africa. There is so much going on - you can combine the beautiful baobab-studded Ruaha with it's super prides of lions, with the more sedate yet equally enchanting Selous Game Reserve before your romantic beach gtetaway. You can even combine Ruaha and the Serengeti before your Zanzibar retreat for one of the most spoiling itinerariesTanzania has to offer - here you will get the bustle ad action of the Serengeti whilst also enjoying the truly intimate and romantic seclusion of Ruaha.

You can also easily combine Kenya to your Zanzibar beach honeymoon, which will offer you yet more options to choose from! And the choices go on...

How much does a Zanzibar Honeymoon cost?

The beauty of Zanzibar is that the prices of accommodation are well and truly wide ranging... You can enjoy a splash of luxury for around $140 per person per night, or full on Indian Ocean private tranquility for $600 per person per night. The choice is well and truly yours! You can plump for an even more lavish and completely exclusive retreat with the magical Mnemba Island, off the coast of Zanzibar. Other islands include Thanda and Fanjove - a nice alternative or addition to a Zanzibar honeymoon if you are after a lot of beach time relaxation.

    Zanzibar Luxury Vs Zanzibar Adventure

Zanzibar is blessed with great beaches and a host of different activities. Again, how you want to play it is entirely up to you. There really is adventure and luxury around every corner - you can stay in a luxury hotel with your own villa and privacy, and still have all the activities you want on your doorstep. If you are seriously keen divers and not so fussed about serious luxury accommodation, then we would suggest looking at the surrounding Zanzibar Islands, Mafia and Pemba - both of which have seriously amazing diving, and opportunities to swim with the biggest fish on earth, the mighty whale shark! Zanzibar does offer seriously luxurious options which are hidden and private, however, if you are really seeking to push the boat out to be absolutely secluded, then take a look at Mnemba Island - pure beach exclusivity and luxury. Also consider Fanjove, a more reasonably priced but rustic private island, and Thanda - again, unrivalled Indian Ocean luxury.

When is the best time for a honeymooon on Zanzibar?

The best time to go to Zanzibar is similar to the rest of Tanzania. Generally the dry season is recommended which runs from July to October. However, you will still have a fabulous time just outside these times (October and June), avoiding high season prices, and also from December – March is great – it could rain in showers, but generally will be temperate and nice.

    Top 5 Zanzibar honeymoon tips

  • Our favourite spoiling honeymoon in Tanzania is to go beach-safari-beach. The reason we love it so much is that it gives you  such variety, and also saves money when not on safari for a longer amount of time - which can be important for honeymooners after a costly wedding! Go to Zanzibar before or after your trip, and maybe the mainland coast or the other islands of Zanzibar on the other side of your safari.
  • Ask us about the best botiquey hotels on Zanzibar. We have carefully selected the best finds on the island, which definitely trump the big hotel experience which can be rather soulless for your romantic getaway.
  • Ask us about honeymoon offers - these can dramatically reduce the price of some of the more costly accommodation options!
  • Take a walking tour of the historic and charming Stone Town - it is very interesting to visit, and although slightly run down, there is much rich history to be discovered in its crumbling walls
  • Explore the surrounding Indian Ocean! There is a colourful marine life on your doorstep - if you are an at all active couple, then put the book down for a day and experience everything Zanzibar has to offer.

Zanzibar Honeymoon Vs Indian Ocean Islands

Zanzibar is our main choice for beach time after an East Africa safari because firstly, we love Zanzibar, and secondly, it is so close! You can be on safari one hour, and the next swimming in the Indian Ocean - it couldn't be easier. The other islands such as Mauritius and the Seychelles can definitely be done, but we think, why spend more money and waste more time, when Zanzibar is quite literally on your doorstep, and offers everything you could need from an Indian Ocean Beach experience. Romantic lodges, beautiful sunsets, fantastic food and a huge amount of activities - it doesn't get much better than Zanzibar.

  • How to combine safari with beach from Zanzibar

You can easily combine a safari in any park in Tanzania and Kenya. Most flights will touch down in Dar es Salaam, and then go on to Zanzibar - it really couldn't be simpler. It is especially easy from Tanzania, as there is no need to waste time twiddling your thumbs at passport control! You can also combine Zanzibar with Southern Africa itineraries; however, it will take a bit more time with costly flights.
