The Selous Game Reserve: An expert guide to Selous Safaris

The Selous Game Reserve is a unique and unusual safari environment; a vast, thriving wildlife area of forests and woodlands around the lagoons, sandbanks and lakes of the Rufiji River.

With its diversity of game and scenery the Selous is an area that naturally appeals to a photographic lens, as the waterways and plains reflect the changing colours of the sun.

Selous: Wildlife

The Selous wildlife is all the more interesting because it attracts both East and Southern African wildlife, both resident and migratory, and over 440 known species of birds.

The waterways of the Rufiji River Delta attract elephant herds, and are packed full of grunting hippopotami and yawning crocodile that lumber into the water at the first sound of a boat.

The banks attract large herds of plains game depending on the season, dispersing after the rains and regrouping when the water sources concentrate.

Selous Safaris: Walking, Boating, & Camping

The conservation area allows walking and boating safaris, unlike any National Parks, and guiding standards are high. Many camps will arrange fantastic fly-camping nights in the bush, bookable in advance.

Selous: The Reserve

Covering almost 50,000 square km, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest areas set aside for wildlife preservation anywhere in the world. It accounts for 5% of the land mass of Tanzania, and yet all options for tourists are high quality, low-impact lodges that provide a high standard of accommodation.

Selous: Scenery

Selous scenery is widely varied, with unusually green grasses and tangles of vegetation. The river routes are characterised by legions of tall Borassus Palms along the banks that grow up to 25m tall, and leave a tall headless totem when the water courses move to leave them high and dry. The Selous conserves a surprisingly colourful African landscape, with white leadwood trunks in stark contrast to the surrounding vibrancy of well-watered greens and a ranging palette of sandy terracottas.

Selous Lodges

We have included all the lodges below ordered by our ranking, and by price. Clicking on any of the links will bring up more information; our detailed view of the lodge, video, photos, key facts etc. However, since we have been to all these lodges ourselves, we would recommend a phone call or an email to help you to decide where to go.

Beho Beho
Quite simply one of the best lodges in Africa. Superlative guiding, stunning accommodation and superb walking areas make Beho Beho Tanzania's No.1 lodge. It is rare that we give a lodge 5 paws, but this lodge has it right in all the right places. Unquestionably worthy of 5 paws….potentially worthy of a 6 paw grade!

Selous Safari Camp
Undoubtedly the best tented lodge in the park and worthy of a 5 paw grade due to great response we have from clients reporting back to us about their stays here. Superb resident game and good access to excellent boating safaris make Selous Safari Camp one of our favourites here.

Sand Rivers Selous
A camp with a great reputation but in our view not quite worthy of a 5 paw rating. Yes, the views are superb, and yes, there are a couple of excellent guides; however we feel that Sand Rivers is resting somewhat on its reputation and now, for this price, Beho Beho is unquestionably the place to stay.

Lake Manze
We almost want to give Lake Manze a 5 paw rating for quality vs cost; this camp really does have a very unique atmosphere in camp. Elephant are guaranteed to walk around your room…priceless! However the guiding, albeit good, is not top class and so we give Manze 4 paws... Unbeatable value.

Kiba Point
At $7,500 a night for the whole camp to yourself, this place simply has to be exceptional, and there is nowhere in the country that can beat a private group experience here. However, we still cannot quite justify the sheer cost…..especially as frustratingly, the rooms do not have good views of the river!

Selous Impala Camp
Impala is a good lodge and we very nearly decided upon a 4 paw rating. However, the location is not the best, and the atmosphere is fairly simple. We have decided to rate the camp as 3 paw. Selous Safari Camp is worth the extra money if you can stretch to it, or alternatively stay at Manze and actually save money!

Selous Wildlife Lodge
Both the Malala lodges (Selous Wildlife and Mivumo River, below) get 2 paws for now; simply because they are too new for us to assess ongoing quality. On our recent visit we were genuinely impressed, but we will watch these over the first year before rating properly....allowing for teething problems in the first year.

Mivumo River Lodge
Both the Malala lodges (Mivumo River and Selous Wildlife) get 2 paws for now; simply because they are too new for us to assess ongoing quality. Rufiji River Camp
Rufiji is one of the oldest camps in the park and relies somewhat on old clients and repeat bookings. There is talk of an upgrade soon which may give us reason to upgrade our rating. However for a similar price we recommend Manze, which is a smaller, more unique camp!
