Ras Kutani: Interesting Facts
Ras Kutani: In depth
Ras Kutani is a 15 minute charter flight south of Dar es Salaam, on the Tanzanian mainland coast. It is beautifully secluded spot that is still a hidden gem in comparison to the more popular beaches of Zanzibar.
The sandy paths wind through the undergrowth leading to the main restaurant area, the swimming pool and guest rooms. The main area is all completely open and blends in fantastically with the surrounding environment. It is relaxed, laid back and the restaurant staff are always there, on hand, to attend to any requests.
The standard rooms are spread along the coast with views overlooking the sea and the fresh water lagoon. They are large open, private huts that come with a thatched roof and a spacious veranda where you can relax in complete privacy. The suites are similar but much bigger and sit further up in the forest with a spectacular panoramic view of the coast line and monkeys for companions. They also have a private plunge pool which can be a perfect honeymoon treat.
It is quite easy to spend a day at Ras Kutani lying on the comfortable beach, reading a book and enjoying the service of the friendly and ever attentive waiters. Equally, you can borrow a kayak and go exploring the mangroves or watch baby turtles hatching on the beach and make their desperate dash for the Indian Ocean!
The food is also incredible, with lots of fresh fish and meat being cooked up on an open BBQ in the evening. It caters for everyone on a Tanzanian holiday .
Ras Kutani is a beach paradise that completely destroys anywhere on Zanzibar in its price bracket, and long may that continue!
Ras Kutani: Client Reviews

Ras Kutani was its own experience, truly romantic and so relaxing. I loved that we walked barefoot the entire time, didn’t realize the whole lodge was on sand, wonderful surprise. We both had wonderful experiences with the staff, specifically David, Kali (one of the staff, super friendly and taught us how to play bao!), and Alice the masseuse. We had some mosquito issues with our netting while we were there, but David was kind enough to move us on our last night and we were put in one of the hilltop suites, again SPECTACULAR. It was the perfect way to end our honeymoon.

The setting though is extremely beautiful. On your arrival you’ll be rowed over a little lagoon to the hotel. Very romantic! If you do decide to stay at Ras Kutani you should stay in the villas on top of the hill or in one of the bungolows at the beach.
Overall we had a great time. Everything worked out perfectly!
Ras Kutani – an absolutely perfect, relaxing way to end. So glad we went here rather than to Zanzibar.

Fundu Lagoon is a great lodge for diving and snorkelling. It has some excellent sites and is known for the quality of its coral life. It is also perfect for honeymooners, but if you’re after a quality beach there may be an issue! It is very tidal and there isn’t much of an idyllic white beach like you get on Zanzibar. However, it does make up for the lack of beach in the quality of the lodge and the all inclusive rate. The rooms are tented and unless you go for the suites or superior suites, the high prices are not justified.
Quite a different style of exclusive accommodation is provided here, tucked about ten minutes away at the other end of the beach from Ras Kutani close to Dar es Salaam.

Matemwe Lodge is a great, small lodge with fantastic, rustic rooms and wonderful views out to Mnemba Island. The only slight issue is the beach, which although good, is not quite as good as others on the island. However, we love Matemwe for offering a great escape from the hustle and bustle that surrounds much of Zanzibar. The lodge offers a top level of service, great food and most of all has a trusty history.
