Tanzania Safari - The Northern Safari Circuit
Tanzania's Northern Circuit, (the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire) incorporates some of the finest wildlife viewing in Africa, and safaris here are memorably rewarding.
This region has a natural abundance of wildlife, and protects the migration of millions of animals each year. How to do it depends on your personal preference; this vast area may be explored by 4x4 or as a flying circuit, staying in elegant, stylish private camping concessions, mobile camping or permanent tented camps, or lodge-based accommodation… or a combination of all of these.
Tanzania Safari – Driving Safari in the North
Historically, the massive circuit of National Parks in the North was visited on a driving route, in which you would arrive at your chosen lodge with your own vehicle, driver and guide. This still remains the best way to experience the landscape beyond Arusha into Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater, but now there are options to fly near-direct to seasonally positioned tented camps in the midst of the Serengeti.
Private Safari
At Tanzania Odyssey we specialise in arranging personalised Land Rover safaris through all of the regions of Northern Tanzania, in the comfort of a private vehicle, with your own highly experienced driver-guide. We strongly recommend private driving safaris in the north, even if there are just two of you.
A mobile driving safari often starts in the hillsides around Arusha, and can include all the parks above, allowing you to really experience the whole range of landscapes and accommodation options, including some tented and some lodge nights. The minimum recommended time for this is 5 nights, although 6 to 8 are strongly recommended, spending the majority of time spent in the Serengeti.
Tanzania Safari - Flying Safari in the North
There are increasing opportunities to fly directly in to the best of the Northern Parks. The excellent luxury lodges run by CCA, (Klein's, Grumeti, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge), may be linked on a flying circuit, or alternatively you can now track the path of the migration also fly to the closest airstrip to one of the seasonal mobile luxury tented camps, such as those run by Nomad’s.
Serengeti Fly-in for the Best of the Best
There is the option to fly directly to distant reaches of the Serengeti for superlative safaris off the beaten track. Certain fantastic camps are well worth flying to, notably Sayari, a permanent tented camp in the idyllically unspoilt region of the Lamai Wedge in northern Serengeti.
Walking in Northern Circuit Tanzania With few exceptions, no walking is allowed in the northern parks and game viewing is by closed-sided vehicle. There are possibilities to walk in certain concession areas, such as around Klein’s Camp, outside the National Park boundaries and in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Crater Highlands.
Most safaris and mountain-climbing expeditions in Northern Tanzania begin and end in Arusha, where many people chose to spend at least one night in the glorious hillsides around the town before taking to the road.
Tanzania Safari - An Idea of Price in the North
For a Northern Circuit Safari the differences of the safari experience are directly related to the cost and to the required high standards of service provided.
As an idea, a private Land Rover safari staying in the Serena lodges will cost around $600 pp /night, (slightly more than a group minibus itinerary, however infinitely preferable!). A CCA flying circuit safari will cost around $1,000 pp /night, staying in the range of luxury Conservation Corporation accommodation, which is mainly classic permanent tented camps, although Conservation Corporation are now also running a fine mobile tented camp in the Serengeti. To maximise your chance of being in the midst of the migration, then a fly-in safari to a semi-permanent tented lodge costs around $700 pp /night.
