Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: What we thinkWithout doubt one of the top ten hotels in the world. Perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and with views to die for; people come to Tanzania just to stay here. This is &Beyond’s flag ship property; quirky and something different from other properties on a northern itinerary. &Beyond call it ‘ Masaai meets Versaille’, we find it verging on over the top - but if you can afford it - you must stay here! One of the top lodges in Africa. 5 Paws, no question! Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: Interesting Facts
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: In depthThe Ngorongo Crater Lodge is located on the rim of the crater with fantastic views into the crater it self. The lodge is best accessed by aircraft arriving at Manyara airstrip, which is an hour’s drive from the lodge. The Crater lodge works well in combination with the Serengeti National Park which is right next door, and so forms an intrinsic part of any top-end Tanzanian safari holiday. The lodge is split into 3 camps, each with a very similar feel and when you are staying at one of the camps you would have no idea that there are two other camps there. The camps are North, South and Tree. Tree Camp is lower down and nearer the rim among the trees, however sometimes the views can be obstructed by the trees. The main communal area is huge and slightly over the top; grand chandeliers, massive windows with the magnificent views and open log fires to keep cosy. The Bandas are private and spread out on the grassland in front of the lodge, the deep reds, chandeliers, free-standing baths make this lodge very different to any where else in north Tanzania. The main activity here is game driving in the crater itself which is normally a daily 6 hour Ngorongo Safari drive; in the vicinity of the lodge are Masaai villages, which can visited on the return from a game drive.

Plantation Lodge is probably our favourite coffee plantation in the Ngorongoro Highlands. It’s tranquil, scenic and in a great spot for easy access to the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. The rooms are simple but luxurious and the food is particularly good as they make use of their fine organic vegetable garden. There are other great places such as Gibbs Farm in the area but we feel that Plantation is setting the highest standards at the moment. Serengeti, Mobile
Serengeti under Canvas is one of the most luxurious mobile tented camps in the Serengeti, owned and run by &Beyond who are one of the top safari companies in Tanzania in terms of guide quality and luxury. The camp is very mobile, tracking the migration at all times of the year in a small intimate camp. Ngorongoro Crater
Since there is not a wide variety of choice on the crater rim the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is an excellent option; good access into the crater whilst remaining quite affordable. Being a large hotel it doesn’t have all the charm you would expect of a lodge in a world famous location. But why should it when you are only here for only a night or two and the focus is the crater itself, not the lodge, its design and aesthetics. |
