Kleins Camp: What we think

This is one of the more luxurious permanent lodges in the Serengeti offering a wide range of safari experiences, including night drives and walking safaris, with superb guides.  Since it is just outside the park itself there is the chance to be away from other tourists.  We really love the position of the lodge; sitting raised on a hill with fantastic views into the Serengeti eco system. The service and guiding at Kleins is some of the best in Tanzania, hardly surprising as it is owned and run by &Beyond.

Kleins gets our 5 paw rating due to the sheer quality of this camp, the guiding and the game-viewing. Located outside the reserve, but with good resident game, the lodge also offers walking and night driving.

Kleins Camp: In depth

Klein’s Camp is located just outside the Serengeti National Park in the north of Tanzania. The camp is best accessed by light aircraft into Lobo airstrip, on daily schedule flights from Arusha and other safari destinations in North Tanzania.  Klein’s owns the immediate land around the lodge which is great terrain for bush walks and exclusive game viewing.

The camp is located astride a hill, with views out across the hills and Serengeti safari plains of this area of the Serengeti/Loliondo. The main area of the lodge is made of stone with a thatched roof and open sides - allowing you to always take in the views. The whole feel of the place is more that of a permanent lodge as opposed to a tented camp, which are more often found in the Serengeti.  An excellent dining area and bar form the centre of the lodge where you meet with you guide to discuss your activities. For those who wish to experience a honeymoon like no other, this is our pick.

The 10 stone and thatched cottages are evenly spaced out on the hillside with great views, classic furnishings and a relaxed homely feel.

Klein’s offers an array of safari activities as it is just outside the Serengeti Park border.  The camp offers night drives, bush walks within its concession area, as well as game drives inside the Serengeti as well.  For those interested in visiting a local village and experiencing Masaai culture a day trip to Ololosokwan is a nice extra.

Selous

Beho Beho has been blessed with one of the most sublime views in the Selous game reserve.  It provides its guests with every luxury and more, whilst over looking a huge area of true wilderness. The lodge consists of 9 stone bandas (the panoramic view comes free) that are not left wanting in terms of providing their guests with every comfort possible. The food, guiding and service are all of the very highest standard.

Ngorongoro Crater

Without doubt one of the top ten hotels in the world.  Perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and with views to die for; people come to Tanzania just to stay here.  This is &Beyond’s flag ship property; quirky and something different from other properties on a northern itinerary.  &Beyond call it ‘ Masaai meets Versaille’, we find it verging on over the top - but if you can afford it  - you must stay here!

Ngorongoro Crater

Since there is not a wide variety of choice on the crater rim the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is an excellent option; good access into the crater whilst remaining quite affordable.  Being a large hotel it doesn’t have all the charm you would expect of a lodge in a world famous location.  But why should it when you are only here for only a night or two and the focus is the crater itself, not the lodge, its design and aesthetics.
