Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge An old colonial Arusha Hotel, surrounded by richly verdant foliage on the lower slopes of Mount Meru.
The house was completed in 1908, and was built by a retired German Schutztruppe officer named Augustus Leue, who chose to remain here with his family rather than returning to Germany. He planted rubber trees and food crops, raised cattle, and built the magnificent spring-water-filled lake at the heart of the grounds. Accommodation is in recently renovated two-storey blocks with heavy architecture and solid mountain farm charm. Chunky stone fireplaces and timber beams give the sitting rooms a cosy feel, but the most attractive aspect of Ngare Sero is the enchanting gardens that flourish on all sides. At least 200 species of bird have been spotted among the buds and branches of this profusion of trees and flowers. A trout stream in the midst allows fishermen to cast a line for their supper, and this unusual atmosphere is completed by troupes of Colobus monkeys chattering in the trees.
