Lake Manyara National Park - Lake Manyara Safaris and Lodges

Lake Manyara National Park is a small but scenic safari park, excellent for birdwatching and a good area to find elephant, as well as the potential excitement of spotting a legendary Lake Manyara tree-climbing lion. It is ideally suited for a few hour’s exploring and wildlife watching at the start of a safari and/or a morning at the end, as it lies on route to and from Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara and is a good soft introduction to the safari experience. Manyara is a magical and scenic park with a horseshoe-shaped driving route through wooded pathways that wend between the banks of the alkaline soda water lake and the impressive rise of the Great Rift escarpment.

At the northernmost aspect, close to the park gates, the forest and woodlands are fed by streams of freshwater flowing through the porous volcanic rock here, but further south, around Msasa River, the volcanic rock gives way to ancient, crystalline rock, creating impressive waterfalls down the Rift Valley escarpment.

Lake Manyara; Wildlife

Elephant, giraffe, buffalo and wildebeest can be found grazing in unexpected clearings in the woodlands or heading towards water sources to drink or wash. The rivers and riverbeds provide scenic vistas for wildlife watching.
Warthog seem to thrive here, growing notably fat and tuskered, and it is a natural playground for baboons and monkeys.

The tree-climbing lion of Lake Manyara inspire extensive theorising as to the wonders of evolution, and are also notoriously rarely seen. Watch footage of Manyara National Park, click to view our Lake Manyara video.

Manyara National Park: Insight

Manyara occupies 320 square km, but 231 square km of these are made up of its vast alkaline lake, which attracts wide flocks of pink flamingoes. Over the years we have found the northern access point of Manyara increasingly busy, although the scenic southern reaches remain pleasantly quiet, benefitting guests at Lake Manyara Tree Lodge.

Lake Manyara Tree Camp
We actually view Lake Manyara Tree Lodge as CCAfrica's (now '&beyond's'!) best property in East Africa. A fantastic location, away from the crowds and a truly stunning lodge with great guiding and superb food. All of these mean that Lake Manyara Tree Lodge gets 5 paws... without any doubt whatsoever!

Serena
The Lake Manyara Serena has the best views of any of the lodges at Manyara and the bar has arguably one of the best views in Tanzania. It is a great option for an economical stay, but it gets only 3 paws on the basis that it is a large hotel, as opposed to a more authentic camp. A good value choice.

Kirurumu Tented Lodge
Kirurumu is our favorite camp on Manyara's Rift Valley escarpment. The rooms are authentic little tents that are charming and unpretentious. Couple this with the fact that the lodge is very well priced and has simply superb views, you have a great choice for accommodation at Manyara.
