Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands. The main island of Unguja, known across the world as Zanzibar, is part of a much greater archipelago with islands ranging from the small coral atolls of Mnemba and Chumbe to the huge Pemba Island North of Unguja. Due to its size, Pemba is discussed at length on its own page on the toolbar. Below is a brief summary of the most famous islands off Unguja's coast.
Mnemba Island is probably the most famous beach lodge in the Indian Ocean. Located off Zanzibar's North East tip, Mnemba is a Maldivan styled island, with only ten rooms and Africa's finest beach. With a price tag to match its quality, Mnemba has won numerous awards and remains the retreat of VIP's, and the super rich.
Chumbe Island to the south west of Stone Town, has won a number of awards for its approach to sustainable eco tourism. The lodge has a unique design and a resilient eco clientele. The snorkelling here is superb. However in our view Chumbe is not a place to stay for long due to its lack of good beach.
There are a clutch of islands just off Stone Town, including Chapwani, Bawe and Changuu ('Prison') Island, all of which have accommodation options, but are marred by their proximity to the Stone Town shipping lanes.
