Zanzibar: Islands
Images of sensual, historic Zanzibar Island tend to eclipse the glory of its satellite islands and beaches.
Yet approaching Zanzibar from the air, you see that here lies a wonderful archipelago of islands, with numerous tiny coral atolls and islands to explore, providing a very different and intimate beach experience.
The Indian Ocean shines translucent over sand bars and shallow coral reefs, a colourwash ranging through a glorious palette of turquoise and sea-greens. Dotted throughout are a scattering of temptingly remote beaches and islands, with some real and wonderful possibilities to stay and explore.
Anyone in need of true escapism should consider these possibilities; skipping off from mainland Zanzibar to one of the various 'hideaway' islands, which are each very different in style and experiences that that they offer.
These range from the self-conscious simple pleasures of Chumbe Island eco-resort to the south west of Stone Town, to the extreme and exclusive luxury of Mnemba Island off the northernmost point.
There are a clutch of islands just off Stone Town, including Chapwani, Bawe and Changuu ('Prison') Island, all of which have accommodation options, but are marred by their proximity to the Stone Town shipping lanes.
Please take a look at the range of lodges below.
