The Serengeti National Park

Serengeti: An Introduction

The Serengeti is Africa's most famous park. Renowned for the two million strong wildebeest 'Great Migration' and incredible concentrations of predators, the Serengeti is a park that guarantees an exceptional safari. The vast endless grass plains (Serenget in Maasai) are the richest grazing grounds on the continent; home to the largest herds on the planet, and the highest concentrations of predators in Africa. Just focussing on the Great Migration however would not be doing the park justice for it is widely believed that if you took the Great Migration out of the park, the Serengeti is still the finest park in Africa.

Originally created to preserve the path of the Great Migration, the Serengeti and its surrounding reserves cover nearly 30,000 square kilometres. Throughout the year the huge wildebeest and zebra herds move in a clockwise direction around the plains, searching for fresh grazing grounds. To maximise your chance of viewing the herds, choosing the right accommodation, for the time of year you are travelling, is crucial. Have a read of the Great Migration page on the tool bar to gain an understanding of the movement of the herds.

Serengeti: An overview of where to stay

The Serengeti has a huge range of accommodation, ranging from large hotels to small luxury lodges and no frills safari camps. The Serengeti is most famous however for its mobile camps - light weight safari camps that effectively move with the Migration herds. There are a number of these mobile camps operating in the Serengeti with our favourites being Alex Walker's Serian, Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp, Asilia's Olakira Camp and finally CCA Serengeti Under Canvas.

If the idea of 'going mobile' is a little too adventurous then our favourite luxury lodges are Singita's Faru Faru, Sabora and Sasakwa, as well as Kleins Camp, Sayari Camp and the new Nomad Lamai. The Serena and Sopa hotels are the best accommodations for those with young children.

On Safari in the Serengeti: Our View

Vast herds, huge predator concentrations, uninterrupted views, river crossings, huge lion prides, great leopard sightings, high concentration of cheetah, some of the best camps in Africa….what more do you want! The Serengeti is one of those very rare places that receives so many accolades yet manages to live up to all the hype. Surrounded by amazing tribes, such as the Masai and Hadzabe, there is even more to this park than meets the eye. In a nutshell, the Serengeti is the mother of all safari parks and the most celebrated wildlife reserve in the world. It is like a lost world. In our view there is nowhere else like it. Absolutely outstanding!

The Serengeti: When to go

The Serengeti is one of the very few places in Africa of which you can say the game viewing is outstanding at any time of year. April and May sees the heaviest rains but even then, the lodges are ridiculously good value and the park is quiet. We believe the very best time of year to be in the park is either from January to March which includes the spectacle of the Great Migration calving, or alternatively from the middle of July all the way to the middle of November when the herds are crossing the Mara river to or from Kenya.

Serengeti Safaris: What game will you see

There are so many different species in the Serengeti that this list could go on forever. The Serengeti's main attraction is the Great Migration, consisting of up to 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 thompson, impala and grant's gazelles. The predator viewing here is exceptional with approximately 3-4,000 lion and huge numbers of cheetah, leopard and hyena. Other game found in the park include topi, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, hyraz, genet, hares, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, monitor lizard, aardwolf, many kinds of primates including baboons, vervet and colobus monkeys, and over 500 species of bird.

Serengeti: What activities are on offer

The main activity in the Serengeti is daytime game driving. No night safari is permitted inside the park but there are a number of lodges found in the reserves adjacent to the Serengeti which allow this activity. Most notable are Singita's Grumeti Reserves ( Sasakwa, Faru Faru and Grumeti Reserves Sabora) as well as Kleins Camp and the camps in the adjacent Loliondo reserve are where guests can night drive. Walking is also possible outside the park, and a couple of camps in the far North of the park allow for walks within the park boundaries. Speak to us for the most up to date information on walking inside the Serengeti as the rules change all the time! There are no boating safaris in the area.

Serengeti: The regions explained

The Serengeti National Park is absolutely huge. If you are intent on viewing the Great Migration then where you stay is as much dependant on the time of year you are travelling as it is the style of camp or hotel you are looking for. Get the location wrong and this park is so big that you will not see the herds. The Serengeti is therefore broadly divided into four distinct areas - the central Seronera Valley, the Western Corridor, the Northern Lobo and Kogatende areas, and finally the Southern Plains.

The Center: Seronera Serengeti:

The centre of the Serengeti is called Seronera. Seronera is a network of river valleys that ensure year-round water supplies and keep the region incredibly rich in wildlife throughout the year. The area has phenomenal concentrations of game and sees the migration herds move North in May to June and back again South in November to December. The only downside to this area is the number of large hotels and subsequent traffic on safari. We often use camps on the periphery of the area, giving guests the option of going into the busier area if they choose. Dunia Camp is our favourite camp here, along with the mobile camps when the migration moves through, specifically the Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp and CCA Serengeti Under Canvas.

The Western Corridor, Serengeti

The Western Corridor follows the path of the Grumeti River up towards Lake Victoria. This region provides superb wildlife viewing action in May and June, when the migration crosses the crocodile infested waters of the Grumeti. At this point camps such as &beyond's Grumeti River Camp, Kirawira and Mbalageti come into their own. The two mobile camps that are superb at this time of year are the Serengeti Safari Camp and Serengeti Under Canvas.

The North, Kogatende, Lobo and Lamai, Serengeti

The Northern reaches of the Serengeti remain fantastically quiet and unvisited, due to their relative inaccessibility (a good 10 hour drive from Seronera) and lack of large hotels. Previously inaccessible swathes of the Serengeti at Kogatende, close to the Masai Mara border, have been opened up over the last few years, either by extended driving safaris or with flying safari's to two superb permanent tented camps - Sayari Camp and Nomad Lamai. From July through to the end of October the Migration is resident in the area and is the finest place to see the Migration's river crossings; as the herds often cross the Mara River daily. This region has been described as 'ultimate paradise' for keen safari buffs and is the best place for walking safari inside the park. All the mobile camps move up for here for the whole period.

The Southern Plains, Serengeti

The Serengeti's Southern plains are where the name of the park comes from. Huge endless grass plains stretch from Southern Seronera into the Ngorongoro Conservation area. The area is not as good for game out of the migration season as the central Seronera region, or the Western Corridor, but from December through to April the migration covers the entire area. February is a superb time of year to be here for the calving season when 8,000 wildebeest are born every day for a two week period! The only two permanent lodges here are Ndutu Lodge and Kusini Camp however all the mobile camps move down to the area for the whole period.

Serengeti Lodges

We have included all the lodges below ordered by our ranking, and by price. Clicking on any of the links will bring up more information; our detailed view of the lodge, video, photos, key facts etc.

Ranking
- Outstanding

Alex Walkers Serian - mobile camp
With only six rooms, Alex Walker's Serengeti Serian Camp is a small and classic tented safari experience; in our view the best of the mobile camps. Alex Walker is one of East Africa's finest guides and with him in camp for the majority of the year, this camp is in a league of its own. Be under no misconception, this is certainly an adventurous camp that takes you back to the basics of safari, but if ever there was a camp that has it right in all the right places, Serian is it.

Alex Walkers Serian

Faru Faru River Lodge - permanent lodge
We believe that Singita have raised the levels of safari accommodation in East Africa; Faru Faru is certainly one of East Africa's finest safari camps. There is debate in the office here about which of the three Singita properties is the very best, but Faru Faru gets the winning votes. The camps location means that attention has to be paid to coincide with the Migration herds, but for those of us who like a bit of extra finesse, it earns its rating with aplomb.

Grumeti Reserves - Faru Faru
$1,200pp More info & Video >

Sabora Plains Tented Camp - permanent camp
Designed in a 1920's safari chic style, Sabora gets 5 paws because this camp epitomises everything that the Serengeti is so famous for; rolling plains to the horizon, beautiful remote atmosphere and superb accommodation. As with Faru Faru and Sasakwa, the sheer quality of accommodation and service here is absolutely exceptional, putting the vast majority of other Serengeti lodges to shame. An outrageously good camp!

Grumeti Reserves - Sabora
$1200pp More info & Video >

Kleins - permanent lodge
Kleins Camp is in a private reserve just outside the North East of the Serengeti. With night safari as well as a walking safari and off road driving, Kleins offers activities that camps inside the park cannot offer. The views here are truly stunning, competing with Sasakwa and Serengeti Lamai for the Serengeti's best location, the rooms are equally superb and the guiding is as good as anywhere. If you can coincide your stay here with the Migration, there are few places in Africa that beat it.

Kleins
$1045pp More info & Video >

Sasakwa - permanent lodge
Sasakwa is the Serengeti's most luxurious lodge, by a very long way. With the finest views of any Serengeti camp and a huge range of activities (including horseriding, tennis archery, night safari and walking safari), Sasakwa has unbelievably high quality accommodations and truly exceptional service levels. The lodge is the finest property in the Serengeti on many levels, but much more of a hotel than an actual safari camp. Sasakwa is a destination in itself.

Grumeti Reserves - Sasakwa

Serengeti Safari Camp - mobile camp
With some of the best guides, private vehicles and great camp positions in the Serengeti, Nomad Tanzania are at the forefront of mobile safaris in this region. Similar to Alex Walker's Serian, the Serengeti Safari camp shades it over Serian due to the fact that the camp is truly migrational, moving its location at least five times throughout the year over Serian's twice. However we prefer the rooms at Serian, hence SSC's 4 paw rating.

Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp

Grumeti River Camp - permanent camp
&beyond's Grumeti River Camp is located in the Western corridor of the Serengeti and sits directly on a hippo filled section of the Grumeti River itself. The camp is one of the Serengeti's most luxurious tented accommodations and comes with the usual high standards of guiding and service from &beyond. Very good for the migration from May through to early July, Grumeti also has good resident game and can be used year round.

Grumeti
$1050pp More info & Video >

Olakira Camp - semi mobile camp
Olakira is Asilia safaris Serengeti mobile camp. With ten spacious en-suite tents, and the usual high standards of Asilia, Olakira is probably the parks best value accommodation. Moving twice a year, Olakira has the same seasonal viewing set up as Serian so cannot be called truly migrational. However the value on offer here is undeniable considering the quality on offer. In summary, a classic and very good value safari camp that we send a lot of business to.

Olakira
$685pp More info & Video >

Sayari Camp - permanent camp
Sayari camp was the first permanent camp in the extreme Northern Kogatende/Lamai area of the Serengeti. Located close to the Mara river, Sayari Camp is a great base to explore the river area, with high chances of crossings. The camp itself is luxurious and officially Asilia's flagship property. Definitely worthy of a highrating and one of the best places to be in from mid-July to mid-October.

Sayari
$837pp More info & Video >

Dunia - permanent camp
Located just south of the central Seronera part of the park, near the Moru Kopjes Dunia Camp has a great location for good year round game. Sister camp to Olakira and Sayari, Dunia is not mobile but has the design of a mobile camp. Seven tents are tucked imnto the trees but have great views over the Serengeti. Hidden from the crowds, Dunia offers a quiet location in what is a busy game viewing area. in amongst the wildlife action all year round!

Dunia Camp

Migration Camp - permanent lodge
Elewana's Migration Camp is located in the northern Lobo part of the Serengeti. The camp has received our 4 paw, 'very good' rating due to its location and camp style. With a great pool and good access to remote areas, the lodge is certainly one of the Serengeti's best for clients looking for more luxury than the mobile camps offer. Our only negative is how seasonal the game viewing can be here but Migration Camp is one of the best when the herds pass through.

Migration Camp
$945pp More info & Video >

&beyond's Serengeti Under Canvas - mobile camp
Serengeti Under Canvas is the most luxurious of all Serengeti's mobile camps. With butler service and a focus on excellent hospitality, SUC is a great option for clients who want the adventure of the mobile camps, but also to be pampered at the same time. SUC, as with Nomad Tanzania's Serengeti Safari Camp is fully migrational, moving its location many times throughout the year. A very good camp, albeit one that dosn't offer private safari and is the most expensive of them all.

Serengeti Under Canvas
$1,045pp More info & Video >

Ndutu - permanent lodge
Ndutu Lodge is a permanent lodge just outside the Serengeti, in the Ngorongoro Conservation area. With fabulous views towards Lake Ndutu, this lodge is a very good location to see the herds from January through to early March. The rooms are somewhat basic with a utilitarian style, but there is a charm about this little lodge that we love. Overall, a good lodge, but one that is hugely seasonal.

Ndutu Lodge
$700pp More info & Video >

Nomad Nduara - semi mobile camp
Nduara is set over to the east of the Serengeti in the Loliondo reserve. While the camp is uniquely designed, we give it a relatively middle rating due to the apparent confusion as to its focus. Set in a community concession, it offers walking and night driving but, due to the communities, there is limited wildlife in the area. A great camp to walk from, and a great camp for visiting untouched Masai villages, but not a game viewing destination.

Nomad Nduara
$790pp More info & Video >

Kusini Tented Camp - permanent camp
Kusini is owned and operated by Abercrombie & Kent (Sanctuary Lodges) and so has a good standard of presentation in camp. Very good for Migration viewing around the beginning of the year, specifically February and March, Kusini struggles as a good game viewing destination for the remainder of the year. As a result we rarely use Kusini but regard it as a great camp from January through to March, just poor game out of season.

Kusini
$895pp More info & Video >

Mbuzi Mawe - permanent camp
Located in the southern section of Lobo, just North of the central Seronera river valley, Mbuzi Mawa is the Serena's attempt at a tented camp. The problem is that the Serena hotel chain are good at large hotels, but not at safari camps. As a result, Mbuzi Mawa just doesn't have the atmosphere that a small camp like this should. We rarely use it, believing that all the mobile camps as well as most of the permanent lodges offer a better experience.

Mbuzi Mawe
$700pp More info & Video >

Mbalageti Lodge - permanent camp
There are so few lodges in the Western corridor that any lodge there earns some merit for location alone; this is a seriously good area for wildlife viewing. Mbalageti itself is a little too large to receive top marks from us and does cater for the package holiday market. But Mbalageti is still a good choice for the area, with a reasonable price and great views.

Mbalageti Lodge
$745pp More info & Video >

Serengeti Serena - permanent lodge
Located right in the heart of the park at Seronera, the Serengeti Serena is arguably the best of the Serena hotel chain. Having said that, the Serena's are 4* hotels that offer a good price and a good base for safaris in a good location. Being a company that love the smaller, more safari focussed camps, the Serena is too large to get our 4 paw rating... but a very good option for quality, good value wildlife-watching throughout the year. A great choice for families with young children.

Serengeti Serena
$650pp More info & Video >

Kirawira Camp - permanent camp
The Serena's luxurious attempt at a safari camp is Kirawira, located in the Serengeti's western corridor. Deserving a good rating solely due to its location, Kirawira has the same problem as Mbuzi Mawa in that it is run by a large hotel company. The price of Kirawira is also high, and, considering the Serengeti's best mobile camps are roughly the same price, we cannot recommend Kirawira simply due to the fact it is the smartest incarnation of a large hotel chain.

Kirawira
$950pp More info & Video >

Lemala Serengeti Camp - mobile camp
Lemala is the newest of the mobile camps that is taking on the more established operators. Well priced and with recently refurbished rooms, Lemala is a great mobile camp that moves between the southern plains and the northern Lamai Wedge areas of the Serengeti. Although the camp had a few teething problems in its first few years, we have upgraded it from 3 paw rating to 4. Unquestionably very good value.

Lemala Serengeti
$750pp More info & Video >

Serengeti Sopa - permanent lodge
The Serengeti Sopa is the last hotel in the Serengeti any of us would like to stay in. The hotel epitomises everything that is so bad about safari. In all fairness, the views are utterly beautiful but this is a hotel showcasing mass tourism at its tackiest, we shudder at the thought!
