Matemwe Lodge: What we thinkMatemwe Lodge is a great, small lodge with fantastic, rustic rooms and wonderful views out to Mnemba Island. The only slight issue is the beach, which although good, is not quite as good as others on the island. However, we love Matemwe for offering a great escape from the hustle and bustle that surrounds much of Zanzibar. The lodge offers a top level of service, great food and most of all has a trusty history. The rooms may seem airy and rustic but a lot of people love this type of feel, and so do we. If you’re after a more modern room and maybe a better beach you could look at Ras Nungwi on the north of the island. Matemwe is great and gets 4 Palms, the only slight down side is the beach is not the best on the island. $337 per person per night
It is very hard to rank lodges with one simple measure! But we have tried, and herewith an explanation of our system. Our ranking is subjective (it is the office consensus, after much arguing), and tries to reflect value for money as well as overall quality. Therefore we may award just three globes to certain 'five star' lodges in the hotel tick-box sense, or five globes to some superb, unashamed 'three star' accommodation that consistently provides superb quality experiences for the price. We care a great deal about location, whether in the bush or on the beach, and in many cases this has influenced our choice. It is unorthodox, it may seem at odds with the world view, but we can explain... and we urge you to call us to discuss! 5 - Outstanding4 - Very good3 - Good2 - Average1 - PoorOur Rating:

Matemwe Lodge: Interesting Facts
Matemwe Lodge: In depthMatemwe Lodge is located on the north east of Zanzibar about an hour’s drive from Stone Town, which is a 20 minute flight from Dar es Salaam. The location of the lodge allows for easy access to the Mnemba Atoll. Consisting of 12 thatched and whitewashed bungalows, Matemwe Bungalows extends along a grassy stretch over a quiet, pale sandy beach, linked by flower-covered walkways to an open restaurant. The restaurant is highly recommended as among the best on the island, specialising in an original and diverse menu. It also has views over the Indian Ocean and a southerly second beach where children play and fishermen draw in and out with the tides. The rooms retain a rustic atmosphere but at the same time harbour a sense of quality and high standards; enhanced by their hand-crafted elegance, with sprung mattress beds built onto a raised plinth to ensure lazy ocean views. All the rooms are self-contained and include wonderfully coloured Persian baths in huge bathrooms. Each has their own hammock on the veranda. Activities include sailing in traditional nglawa outriggers, snorkelling, kite-surfing, diving and big-game fishing, as well as reef-walks across the reef in front of the bungalows and bicycle-hire and day trips with picnics. A perfect place for honeymooners. |
