The Z Hotel: What we thinkWe love to dislike the Z Hotel because there is not much to like about it. Built over three storeys and all bunched up on top of itself you don’t really get a sense of space. It’s in the centre of the busy village of Nungwi and attracts the young European market looking for inexpensive fun and a party. Credit to the hotel, it has great rooms and a relatively good restaurant but the location, good beach or not, it is very busy and difficult to find your own space. However, it is cheap and cheap for a reason. We recommend Essque Zalu or Ras Nungwi if you are looking for somewhere in the north of the island. The Z Hotel only gets 1 out of 5. Very sadly it is just too busy in that area of the island and the design of the hotel, all on top of itself, does not create any atmosphere at all. The Z Hotel: In depthThe Z Hotel is located in Nungwi village which is in the north of Zanzibar, only an hour’s drive from the airport and Stone Town. Zanzibar is only a 20 minute flight from Dar. The main area of the hotel is built round the swimming pool area. So the rooms, restaurant and reception are built up around this main focal point of the hotel. The restaurant actually has stunning views over a lovely beach and this is one of Zanzibar’s best beaches, but it is extremely busy. The pool is the dominant feature with a rather happening bar that looks out over the beach. There is a TV room and children’s play room in by the main reception. The rooms are built up in blocks, almost stacked on top of each other. There are various room types but all of them are quite nice. They have TV’s in the mosquito net of the bed, modern bathrooms and air conditioning in all the rooms. All the activities can be arranged from the reception and there is also an activities centre for snorkelling and diving.

A truly fantastic hotel; without doubt one of the very best on the entire African coast. The beach here is very good and due to its location on the north tip of the island is very quiet as there are not hotels to the east of the location. Ras Nungwi offers good value for money on Zanzibar, excellent water sports great facilities and has consistently delivered over the years. Zanzibar, East Coast
Echo Beach is a lovely, relaxed little lodge on one of Zanzibar’s nicest beaches. With Zanzibar becoming ever more popular with adventurous tourists heading out to the tropical paradise, Echo Beach retains a peaceful tranquillity that is hard to match. The lodge has an extremely relaxed atmosphere that becomes a home away from home for its guests. Matemwe Lodge is a great, small lodge with fantastic, rustic rooms and wonderful views out to Mnemba Island. The only slight issue is the beach, which although good, is not quite as good as others on the island. However, we love Matemwe for offering a great escape from the hustle and bustle that surrounds much of Zanzibar. The lodge offers a top level of service, great food and most of all has a trusty history. |
